Roots Not Routers: Why We Need to Unplug
Technology can be an amazing life tool, but we have become slaves to it. Social media, digital voice assistants (Alexa, Siri), TV, streaming services, YouTube, AI, and even our household appliances and cars are all “plugged in.” All the time.
Taking a regular break from technology can bring about many benefits for body, mind, and spirit. It really should be part of our self-care routine on a weekly, if not daily basis.
Body, Mind, and Sprit Benefits of Unplugging:
Body:
- Eases eye strain and tension
- Supports better relaxation and sleep
- Helps lower the stress hormone cortisol
Mind:
- Helps boost focus & clarity
- Reduces anxiety and information overload
- Encourages a reset of the attention span
Spirit:
- Creates space for creativity, daydreaming, and thinking
- Reawakens the inner voice & intuition
- Deepens connection with self & others
But…How Can We Unplug?
This will depend on the individual, but at the heart of it all is deciding to do it, and not giving into the temptation to reconnect during unplugged time.
Here are 10 Easy Ways to Unplug:
Turn it off – log out, set it aside, unplug it, walk away.
- Step outside barefoot for a few minutes – no tech, just you & the Earth.
- Take a walk, a hike, or a run.
- Brew a cup of herbal tea (or coffee) and sip in silence.
- Pick up or return to a hobby or sport.
- Replace evening random scrolling with journaling or reading.
- Do something you’ve been putting off (like decluttering a space).
- Have a “no phone zone” in your home, such as the dining table or bath.
- Go window shopping or read a book if out for a meal or coffee.
- Schedule a weekly “Digital Sabbatical” – built-in no tech time.
If you are serious about improving focus, calm, and creativity… unplug.
If you are overwhelmed, anxious, not sleeping…unplug.
So many of our daily frustrations can be avoided if we simply take a break, and unplug for a while. And I am taking my own advice!
Beginning June 1st, I am unplugging for the month. To practice Deeper Listening, Slower Living, Sacred Connection, and Renewal.
