This little piece of lichen appeared on my front porch today, carried by the wind—or perhaps delivered by a bird. Seeing it instantly brought me back to the beginning of my journey with healing and meditation, so I felt called to share.
When I first learned to meditate as an adult, I followed a lot of guided meditations. They all spoke about grounding—visualizing roots extending deep into the earth. But no matter how much I tried, I never saw roots. Instead, I always saw lichen clinging to a rock, a branch, or a tree trunk.
The essence of grounding is to anchor your energy, reconnect with the Earth, and ensure you can return fully from meditation. But as someone already deeply connected to Mother Earth, my anchoring often looks different. Rather than roots, I sometimes find myself tethered to trees, mountains, or sacred landscapes. And time and time again, I see myself as part of that landscape—just like lichen.
According to the U.S. Forest Service, “Lichens are a complex life form that exists in a symbiotic partnership of two separate organisms.” So it feels fitting that I’ve always visualized my connection to the Earth in this way. My relationship with Mother Earth is symbiotic—she nurtures, provides, shelters, and teaches. In return, I honor her through sustainable practices, mindful living, and teaching others how to work with nature’s gifts.
I also practice Earthworking—a sacred healing method that focuses on restoring balance to the Earth while also healing ourselves. If this speaks to you, I invite you to join me on April 22nd for a free sneak peek into my new program, Earthworking: The Sacred Path.
In this workshop, I’ll share more about the foundational practices of Earthworking, working with earth energy, connecting with elementals, and embracing the deep healing power of nature. We’ll explore meditation, our relationship with the Earth, and how everything is beautifully interconnected.
Are you ready to deepen your connection with Mother Earth?
